1) Status messages
There is a fantastic feature on Orkut, status update. Through this one can let everyone know what one's upto by writing one liner Twitter like messages on Orkut. But the shortcoming is that whenever one changes a status message, previous status messages are lost forever. I have seen many examples where one modifies the name like 'XXX back from Boston'. How much tidy it would have been had it been be written that on the status message.
2)Activity feeds
On the homepage one can find a list of updates of one's friends. Whenever some activity takes place on a friends' profile like album modification/change in profile description/new comments on the album then a feed is sent to all the friends. There is a limited control over these feeds eg. if u do not wish to receive activity updates from a certain group of friends then u can do so. But there is no way to choose the friends to whom you would want the updates to go and whom not to. One might not want a certain feed like 'change in relationship status' to reach all the friends but there is no way to control that. I wish user had more control on the feed like the option of screening some feeds or friends to which that will go to.
3) Ask friends
This feature can be used to create polls. This can be used to ask ur friends' opinion about the latest flick or can also be used intelligently for market survey.
4)Search feature
Previously tracking down an individual on orkut was a very tedious process as most of the time there are many users with the same name. Orkut has made that easy by introducing a search filter wherin one can narrow down the search criteria by age range etc.
5)Integration of mobile with Orkut
There is a facility to recieve notifications via sms. This feature is charged and the rules depend on the mobile service provider. The user can control the type of notifications she wants to recieve like 'new friends request' or 'new testimonial'. Useful for those who always want to stay updated on the orkut news!
